Towards the end
of summer, you might catch the sweet scent of the Belladonna lily drifting on
the air. Her name means Beautiful Lady, and she certainly lives up to it. She
sends up tall, elegant stems topped with fragrant pink trumpets before the
leaves appear—hence the affectionate nickname Naked Lady. Sometimes the flowers
are white or dark pink.
Belladonnas are
endemic to the winter‑rainfall regions
of the Western Cape, storing their energy in large bulbs to survive drought and
